The colour of the skin, hair, and eyes is decided because of the melanin pigment. These pigments are being produced in the cells called as melanocytes. The skin complexion becomes lighter or pure white. Vitiligo is a skin condition in which white patches are seen on the loss of skin pigment, usually this condition can affect any part of the body. Around 1 percent of the population of the world is affected by this disease. People of all origin and both sexes are affected by this disease. This condition is commonly seen on darker peoples because there is no tanning of their skin. Vitiligo is commonly seen on hand, feet and face. Before the age of 20 most of the patient starts noticing their vitilgo, it is also seen in the area which has minor injury.

How vitilgo is diagnosed?

There is no need of any special case for the diagnosis of vitiligo, as it is only a cosmetic problem which affects the health of individual. It can also be psychologically traumatic for patient.

What are the clinical symptoms and signs of vitilgo?

The main sign of vitiligo is the presence of white patches. Vitilgo is commonly seen on hands, feet, arms, face and lips. The other areas where they are seen are the armpit and groin, corner of mouth, eyes, nostrils, navels, genitals and the rectal area. People with vitiligo have eyebrows, eyelashes, eyebrows and beard which are of gray colour.

How vitilgo is treated?

The aim of vitiligo treatment is to stop the spread of depigmentation and repigmentation in the skin area which has lost its colour. Treatment choice for vitilgo depends on the spread and variance of disease and the treatment option which is available for physician and patient.
The recent treatment modalities of vitigo consists of medical, surgical or other form of treatment. The aim of most of the treatment is to restore the colour of white patches which are present on skin.

Medical treatments include

Medical treatment for Gynecomastia include application of topical medicines, taking oral psorlen with UVA light or specific wavelength of ultraviolet B

Surgical Treatment

Melanocyte is the most advance form of treatment for vitilgo which treats larger area. After 4 to 6 months of the procedure repigmentation can occur and the result of this process is much better as compared to other surgical procedure. Moreover this is also used in treatment of the difficult areas of the body such ad areolas, genitals and knuckles

What are the precautions you have to take after the procedure?

For one week of the treatment dressing is applied. In most of the cases there is no swelling or bruises after this. Initially you will have some discomfort after the procedure which can be easily managed by taking painkiller. This procedure gives very quick recovery, in brown people repigmentation is seen after 4 to 6 weeks and in Caucasians recovery takes 8 to 12 weeks. Maximum result is seen after 6 months of the procedure.

What are Complications & Side Effects of this procedure?

There may be a hypopigmented ring at the borders of treated and repigmented patches in some patients. Usually this ring disappears automatically or with application of local steroids, or by repeat surgery. The oral antibiotics are prescribed for 7 days to prevent chances of infection.

What is autologous skin grafts?

In autologous skin grafts a skin graft is taken from one area of the patient body and then it is attached to other area. This is used for treating small patches, first a section of normal skin is removed and then the pigmented skin is placed on the depigmented area.

Skin grafts using blisters

In this procedure, the doctor creates blisters on the patient’s pigmented skin by using heat, suction, or freezing cold. The tops of the blisters are then cut out and transplanted to a depigmented skin area.

Micropigmentation (tattooing)

Tattooing implants pigment into the skin with a special surgical instrument. This procedure works best for the lip area, particularly in people with dark skin.
