CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing
Integumentary system is the largest organ in human body. Every Day it is subject to numerous factors that can affect the skin in adverse way. Our makeup, the gravity of the earth and time all do their part to create those furrows, lax or creepy skin, fine lines and wrinkles of the face and especially around the mouth and eyes. Continued exposure to the UV rays of the sun and smoking significantly accelerate the development of these signs of aging resulting in advanced photoaging of the skin resulting in sallow, wrinkled, lax and pigmented skin.
Laser skin resurfacing reduces facial wrinkles, blemishes or scars due to acne or other reasons. In this technique beams of light are directed on skin to be treated, resulting in removing the skin layers. This procedure is also known as lasabrasion, laser peel or laser vaporization. The two types of lasers most commonly used in laser resurfacing are CO2 laser resurfacing and erbium laser resurfacing.

- Erbium Laser Resurfacing
With erbium laser resurfacing moderately deep, superficial lines and wrinkles can be removed from face, hands, neck, or chest. With erbium laser resurfacing, minimal burning of surrounding tissue is caused. There are fewer side effects than CO2 fractional laser treatment so your recovery time should be faster than with CO2 laser resurfacing. In some cases, recovery may only take one week.
This particular laser gives better results in darker skin tones.
CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing
Array of narrow focused microbeams of light are delivered which creates columns of heat within the skin. Due to these beams of heat tissue gets heated leading to collagen shrinkage and tissue injury which in turn stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin tissue. As the new tissue is formed, it decreases sunspots, large pores, lines and wrinkles, acne scars giving a more youthful skin tone and texture.
The fractional ablative approach with CO2 fractional laser gives the most dramatic results.
Since the laser penetrates to precise, controlled depth, the procedure is very safe and predictable.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Number of treatments required varies greatly from patient to patient depending upon your specific condition and severity of the condition, skin type and results desired. Most indications seem to respond after one treatment. For acne scars or traumatic scars multiple treatments might be required about 4-6 months apart. The skin appearance continues improving 4-6 months after the last treatment.
Skin resurfacing procedure
First, the area to be treated is cleansed. A topical anesthetic ointment may be applied or if aggressive resurfacing is needed IV conscious sedation will be done by anesthetist for a comfortable treatment. Then the fractional hand piece precisely reads the discrete contours of your skin treatment area. Your treatment is performed using a fractional hand piece gently guided across the skin delivering microbeams of CO2 energy into the skin. After the treatment is finished, your skin is washed off and ointment is placed on your skin. Usually it takes 1 hour for the treatment to finish depending upon the surface area treated.
What Should I Expect After Treatment?
After Fractional Laser Treatments, your skin might be red, warm with slight swelling and tingling sensation and tightness. All these symptoms and signs will fade within few hour of treatment.
How Long Will It Take To Recover?
Most patients will be able to return to work immediately following this type of procedure.
What Are The Risks And Potential Complications?
- Fractional photothermolysis or fractional laser skin resurfacing offers speedy healing and minimal to no downtime.
- A mild feeling of pricking or burning sensation is felt depending upon area treated and type of device used.
- For some time afterwards skin feels tight and looks sunburned. The pinkish look on the skin will disappear in 1-3 days along with the swelling.
- A bronzed, sun tan look caused by the dead, burnt at each MTZ will then remain for 3 – 14 days before naturally exfoliating.
- As the skin heals itself, there will be mild to moderate skin flaking, which may last for up to 1weeks.
Post laser resurfacing skin care includes
- Make-up can be used straight away if desired.
- You can mask the bronzing and skin flaking by applying a hypoallergenic moisturizer.
- Avoid creams with active ingredients such as AHAs or Retinoids which irritate the skin and could impede the healing process.
- Do not sleep on the treated area, to help avoid any swelling; e.g., sleep on your back rather than your side if your face has been treated.
- Use cooling gels or cool compresses to the treated area if required.
- Avoid sun exposure for 1 week and apply sunscreen agent with an SPF of 30
