Mommy Makeover

While being a mother can be the greatest feeling in the world, pregnancy and nursing can take a toll on your body. Some women can go back to their pre-pregnancy bodies by just diet and exercise, while for some simply diet and exercise may not be enough. For those women mommy makeover can be a great option to gain the body they desire or they previously had.
From a cosmetic standpoint, Mommy Makeovers address pregnancy-related changes in both the breasts and the tummy.

Mommy Makeovers Counter the Physical Effects of Pregnancy

On an average, most women gains about 10 to 25 kg during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, lower back, buttocks and thighs. The breasts grow in preparation for nursing. But there is now a good news; a mommy makeover can help you look your best again.
As the baby grows, so does the abdomen. This may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, also known as stretch marks. These unsightly marks are purple-red in color and concentrated around the belly button and lower abdomen.
These effects often become even more apparent after childbirth and nursing. These effects can be easily reversed by mommy makeover. Many women lose weight over a period of time, unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. As a result there might be weight loss from different places like breasts, buttocks, abdomen and waist may not be consistent and enough. In these cases, a mommy makeover may be in order.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy makeover is done keeping in mind the areas that need changes to bring back the body to your pre-pregnancy glory.

In general, a mommy makeover may include

For example, In some women only breast augmentation may be enough to correct deflated breasts that look like pancakes while some women may need breast implants to give them fullness. Some women may desire breast size reduction with a breast lift.
In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat, while some may need a mini-abdominoplasty.
Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs; and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed.
So broadly speaking mommy makeover consists of breast augmentation or breast lift ad abdominoplasty or tummy tuck.

At Dezire clinic we perform 4D VASER tummy tuck for abdominoplasty

During an abdominoplasty procedure, the skin over abdomen is elevated off the abdominal muscles, and excess skin and fat is removed from the lower portion of the skin flap. This is just the simplified explanation of the procedure. The remainder of abdominal skin still thick due to the fat, just lesser amount of fat. To achieve better contours, the redundant skin needs to be removed, and thus giving a tighter appearance to the abdomen. However, by not thinning the remaining skin, there will not be any improvement in muscular definition. If you don’t have skin that is thin and musculature that is well developed, abdominoplasty alone will have limited results. There will be substantial improvement in the contours but, it will be limited by the fact that the appearance will be very two dimensional – kind of like a sheet pulled flat down till taut. If you are one of those people with thin skin and a well developed musculature, then you will have more definition after an abdominoplasty naturally.

Step 1 – Anesthesia

Abdominoplasty is generally performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation to keep you comfortable during the procedure.

Step 2 – Tummy tuck incision

A horizontal incision is required for full tummy tuck procedure. It is taken between pubic hairline and navel. The length and shape of incision is determined by the degree of correction needed. This incision is used to elevate the skin, remove extra fat and tissue and to repair weakened abdominal muscles.
A second incision might be taken to remove excess fat and skin in upper abdominal area.

Step 3 – Closing the incisions

After the procedure is completed, the incision is closed using sutures, skin adhesives, tapes or clips.

Step 4 – Tummy tuck healing and see the results

The result of abdominoplasty will be a flatter, firmer abdominal contour more proportionate with your body type and weight. It may take some time for final results to be apparent as there is swelling near the operating site and it’s hard to stand upright for the first week or 2 weeks.
In matter of a week or two, you should see your new slimmer profile. The entire procedure takes somewhere between 2.5-5 hours depending upon amount of work that needs to be done.

Tummy Tuck Recovery or Post Tummy Tuck

Following your surgery, the incision is covered with bandages or dressing. A compression garment is recommended to be used to minimize swelling and to support your abdomen as it heals.
The scar left behind fades with time. It takes almost a year for the scar to completely fade. If you have had caesarean surgery in the past, tummy tuck scar can be incorporated with it.

Recovery and results

After the surgery you will have bandages on the incision and you will need to wear the support bra for several weeks. There will be drains placed through the wound. Fluid may ooze from those drains which is normal. You will experience pain for first 4-5 days which can be addressed with pain killers. There will be some soreness and swelling after a week which can stay upto a month. You will start seeing the change in breast size right away however to see the full results you will need to wait until the swelling subsides which will take about a month.
You can resume light exercise like walking after 2 weeks. Heavy and strenuous activities or heavy lifting should be avoided for 6 week from surgery. The scars will take several months to fade. At one year they will be completely faded.

Preparing for Your Mommy Makeover

It is important to take some very important aspects and factors into consideration before deciding to have a mommy makeover.

They include

Are you done having children?

If you plan to have more children, wait. You will need support from your vertical muscles in the abdomen during pregnancy. They are tightened during a tummy tuck and can re-separate during pregnancy.

Are you at a stable weight?

Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Be sure to lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery.

Are you finished breastfeeding?

The enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection hence wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery.

What are the body parts that need makeover?

A personalised plan can be devised targeting the problem areas or the body areas that need change.

How long to wait for liposuction and mommy makeover after caesarean?

It is wise to wait for 6-12 months after caesarean to have mommy makeover. Whenever you are ready please make an appointment at one of Dezire clinics located at Pune, Bangalore, Delhi or Gurgaon. Mommy Makeover Recovery

Your recovery process and times will be different depending on what your mommy makeover entails. You can plan for recovery like this: Arrange for someone to help you get around the house and help you with your medication for at least the first 24 hours after your mommy makeover. You may need medication for the pain and to control nausea caused by the pain medication.
Try sleeping on several pillows on your back and keep your legs slightly bent at the hips to minimize the tension on your incision, reduce pain and result in a thinner scar.
Avoid heavy lifting, contact sports and jogging for up to six weeks. Wear your support bra every day, early in your recovery after breast reduction or breast lift. This will help minimize swelling. Most swelling should subside within a few weeks, although some swelling may persist for up to 1 month after breast reduction.
You will need to wear a compression garment during your tummy tuck recovery. You can shower once the dressing, sponges and gauze pads are removed. Usually the dressings, sponges and gauze pads will be removed within 72 hours of your mommy makeover.
