Keloids are overgrown scars left from skin injuries, surgical incisions, lacerations or burns. They can appear anywhere on the body but are most common over the breastbone, on the earlobes & shoulders.
Kleoid is derived from the Greek word cheloides which means crabs claw. They are similar to hypertrophic scars but are mainly seen along the borders and goes with time. Kleoids takes even three months or years to develop they show normal response to dermal injury. Kleoids are mainly seen in dark skinned people, mainly in people of Africa and Asia.
Keloids are seen when scars are formed after skin injury, burn or any other surgical incision. Keloids can be seen on any body parts but the most common areas where they can be seen are earlobes, breastbone and in shoulders.

What are the causes of Kleoids?

When there is a surgical incision, ear piercing, pimples, ingrown hair or any trauma to any area of body inflammation is seen due to which keloids are formed. When body fails to form new tissue known as fibrous protein or collagen during healing Keloids are formed. In some people keloid are genetically seen which, Keloids growth causes scar which is thick and raised. If the Keloids are more in number it can cause itching, stinging or burning sensation. They are mainly of red colour than surrounding skin

Who are at the risk of developing Keloids?

Patients of less than 30 years of age and darker skin are prone to Keloids development. Kleoids are mostly seen in the areas of shoulders, upper arms, earlobes and cheeks. Other causes of Keloids formation are burn, ear piercing which can cause wound healing.

Pulsed Dye Laser

Pulsed dye laser is the most effective treatment for Keloids in which short pulsed laser are used and found to be more effective in treating Keloids along with other techniques. In Keloids, pruritus and scars lasers have shown definitely good results and this has been there for six months. Laser directly works on microvasculature and it reduces erythema and purities and also improves the texture of skin.
Treatment of keloids with short-pulsed, 585-nm pulsed dye laser appears to be most effective if used early and in conjunction with other techniques. Laser-treated portions of keloidal median sternotomy scars showed significant improvement in erythema, pruritus, and scar height compared with untreated portions of the same scars, and these improvements persisted for at least six months.The principal effect of a pulsed dye laser is on scar microvasculature, reducing erythema and pruritus and improving skin texture.
