Hymenoplasty (Revirginity Procedure)
Hymen repair, hymen reconstruction, hymen surgery, virginity repair surgery, hymenal ring surgery are some other names for hymenoplasty.
Hymenoplasty or revirginity procedure refers to the cosmetic surgery that restores your hymen. Hymenoplasty is a simple procedure that repair torn hymen. The torn hymen is repaired by cosmetic suturing on both torn ends.
The hymen is a membrane in a girl’s vagina which is ring shaped and it usually gets ruptured on first sexual intercourse and its rupture signifies the end of her virginity status. . Hymenoplasty restores the hymen into the state before it was first ruptured. Usually done for reasons of moral, cultural or social.

What Is Hymen?
The hymen should not be thought of as the total membrane covering the vagina, but it is a film that is shaped like a ring that has a hole in the middle. The point is to drain the menstrual blood of the womb.
In case abnormality in growth, genital abnormalities are occasionally found where the membrane covers the vagina completely called imperforate hymen which would cause menstrual disorders during puberty. Then in that case a procedure called hymenotomy will be required to create an opening to have a regular menstrual flow. Some women are born with no hymen at all.
The size and shape of this opening (or openings) vary greatly from person to person.
Rupture of The Hymen
Hymen normally gets ruptured during first sexual intercourse. In some instances, it is possible for the hymen to rupture due to strenuous activities like horseback riding, cycling, gymnastics. Inserting tampon can also rupture the hymen. Sometimes trauma into vaginal area can rupture the hymen, too. Since the hymen is positioned deep inside the vagina and it has elastic properties so it is protected from trauma and rupture in day to day life.
Girl may be completely unaware about her ruptured hymen as there is no to minimal bleeding and pain when this happens.
Having an intact hymen is considered a sign of virginity in females in many countries and many cultures. For those women it is the honor l, her family and even her community depends on her hymen remaining intact before marriage. For those women the rupture and bleeding that occurs on the wedding night is most crucial. It is the sign of her virginity. Hence, the procedure of hymenoplasty is not just a cosmetic procedure for them.
Type Of Repair Of Hymen
Hymen reconstruction
The procedure can be done under local anesthetic and as a day case surgery. The process takes one to two hours, and patients can return to work the next day. The sutures are dissolvable so you don’t need to get it removed. The stitches will fall off in around 3 week and it will be completely healed in 3 to 4 week time.
Steps of Hymenoplasty
- First the ruptured tags of hymen are identified
- Under magnification 3 layers of hymen are identified
- A layered closure is performed by suturing 1 layer at a time
- The aperture of hymen is left open for menstrual blood flow
The stitches are self dissolving and they fall off around 3 weeks. It takes 3-4 weeks for complete healing
Hymenoplasty for Natural Looking Hymen
In this surgery hymen is reconstructed. This surgery needs to be performed at least 2-4 weeks before marriage or even earlier the better. After complete healing after surgery, the hymen is restored to its state before first rupture. It looks, feels and behaves like natural hymen meaning breaks and bleeds with penetration with no evidence of hymenoplasty surgery.
This procedure is done under local anesthesia. The entire procedure will be completed in one to two hours. You will be discharged the same day. You can walk normally even climb stairs. Avoid strenuous activity until the wound is completely healed.
The risks associated with hymenoplasty are minimal. When they occur, they are usually temporary. Good hygiene is important to decrease the risks of infection. Taking a shower everyday is highly recommended. Swelling and discomfort associated with the procedure will disappear in the few days following the surgery. You can take painkillers for any pain or discomfort.
Who is a candidate for hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty is most often performed for religious, societal or cultural reasons. Having an intact hymen on wedding night can be a life or death situation for women in some cultures, regardless of how the hymen was initially ruptured. It is more than a simple cosmetic procedure for them.
Where is Hymenoplasty Performed?
Hymenoplasty is often an outpatient procedure performed in doctor’s office and it takes only an hour or two under local anesthetic with or without sedation.

Recovery after Hymenoplasty surgery
The vagina needs to be kept very clean to help avoid any kind of dirt particles from settling in the stitch wounds. Do not resume sexual activity until the soreness and discharge has settled, as it will increase the soreness and pain
For first 3 weeks you have to avoid vigorous exercise, excessive stretching of thighs and Indian type of toilet. Sports activities which cause friction in the genital area like jogging, horse riding and cycling are not recommended for 3 weeks after the operation.
