Cheek augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure in which person’s cheek are made prominent using surgical techniques. To achieve cheek augmentation slid implants can used over cheekbones. Injections with the patient’s’ own fat or a soft tissue filler, like Restylane, are also popular.
Cheek Augmentation with Fillers or Injections
Injections of patient’s own fat or soft tissue fillers like hyaluronic acid, restylane or juvederm offer a less invasive and less expensive approach to cheek augmentation. The fillers , fill up the space under skin and give immediate improvement in the appearance eliminating wrinkles which can last upto several months to a year. This procedure can easily be repeated and with every new procedure fine adjustments can be done. Autologous fat is considered best option but eventually gets completely absorbed.

The Cheek Implant
The cheek implants come in various shapes used for various different purposes. Whether we are just trying to add height to correcting the hollowness below the cheekbone level or whether we are using a combined implant to do a little of both will decide the implant being used. Malar, submalar, or combined are the three shapes of implants available. Malar implants, are placed directly on the cheekbones. This results in making the cheekbone more projected, providing a “higher” contour to the side of the face. In contrast to the malar implants, submalar implants are not placed on the cheekbones. The intention of their use is to augment the midface, especially if the person has a gaunt or “sunken” appearance to this area. Combination of implants or malar/submalar combination, are used to serve both purposes by lifting the midface and cheekbones. The most commonly used implants today are made out of silicone. They have been around for thirty years and they are intended as permanent implants. They have a very good acceptance and do not get rejected by the body, but care needs to be taken to avoid infection.
The Cheek Implants Procedure or cheek augmentation surgery
Anesthesia
It is usually performed under general or local anesthesia. The procedure takes approximately one hour if done as a stand-alone procedure. You will feel very sleepy and relaxed due to the use of twilight sedation. If using local anesthesia, it is injected, to numb the area that will be worked on.
Cheek implants
With the help of a small incision made on the inside of lip, quite high up cheek implant is inserted. In order to place the implant directly on bone, the muscles and soft tissue of the cheeks are elevated and the implant is placed. Dissolving sutures can be used inside the mouth. They are much higher so that a patient’s tongue cannot even feel the stitches.

Cheek lift surgery involves lifting the fat pad in the cheek called malar fat pad is lifted high resulting in richness of eyes and cheeks. The results of cheek lift surgery are more permanent compared to the injections. The healing and recovery is also quick and the results change the look drastically making you look younger.
Post Operation Advice
The first one to two hours after surgery is spent in the recovery room. Instructions are given on how to care for the incisions sites, which are in the mouth. The stitches used are usually dissolvable.
Pain medication is prescribed, although this is usually unnecessary after the first day. Sleeping with your head elevated is suggested to reduce the any discomfort or swelling. There may be mild bruising and swelling which lasts for approximately one week. This can easily be covered with make up. Most patients return to work and social activities after 1-2 days. Heavy physical exercise is avoided for three weeks following the procedure.
The result with the implants is immediate, however it takes some time for the swelling to subside completely.
Side Effects of Cheek Implant
These are temporary side effects like swelling ,bruises and discomfort which will go within 10 days.
